Hōmeishu Medicinal Liqueur
Hōmeishu Medicinal Liqueur: Unique liqueur dating back hundreds of years
Hōmeishu is a type of medicinal liqueur unique to Tomonoura. Its history has been traced back to 1659, when a specialist of Chinese medicine living in present-day Osaka named Nakamura Kichibei is said to have first brewed it.
The traditional method of brewing this liqueur has been passed down from generation to generation. The liqueur contains a mix of thirteen herbs and spices such as cinnamon and licorice along with glutinous rice, kōji, and shōchū. Compared to refined sake, hōmeishu does not spoil easily and has a long shelf-life, making it a practical gift.
Today, there are four hōmeishu breweries in Tomonoura, each with their own formulations of this liqueur passed down over hundreds of years. Although hōmeishu is often thought of as a medicinal drink, it is actually very mild and easy to drink. It is even used in many sweets and desserts in Fukuyama.
