Fukuzen-ji Temple Taichōrō: A Temple with a view praised by Korean envoys
An envoy of officials from the Korean peninsula visited Tomonoura in 1711. The head of this envoy, Yi Bang-won, praised the beautiful, scenic view from the reception hall of Fukuzen-ji Temple as “the most beautiful view in all of Japan.”
During a later envoy from the Korean peninsula in 1748, a high-ranking official named Hong Gye-hui named this reception hall “Taichōrō,” and his son devised a calligraphic rendering of the name. This piece of calligraphy is a part of the six articles consisting of fourteen items of the Fukuzen-ji Temple collections registered to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme in 2017 as evidence of the peace building and cultural exchanges between Korea and Japan.
