Yodohime-jinja Shrine: Spirit protecting the people of the Hira district

Yodohime-jinja Shrine has protected the people of the Hira district of Tomonoura since long ago. The shrine is dedicated to Yodohime, the younger sister of Empress Jingū, who has a strong connection to Tomonoura.

Because this shrine is located atop the tall Mt. Myōjin-yama, you can enjoy the shrine’s wonderful view overlooking the Port of Tomo. This view is even said to have been praised by the scholar Rai Sanyō. Seeing this shrine with the Seto Inland Sea in the background, you may feel as if the shrine itself is a protective spirit of the bay surrounding Tomonoura.

On the first Saturday and Sunday of August, the shrine is host to the Togyo-sai and Kango-sai festivals. The day before the festival begins, locals make festive dango sweets, which has led to the festival being known as the “Dango Festival.”
